Healing Autism
what is it and, why it's a fools errand...
I’ve heard so many different professionals claim to have cured their children of autism their symptoms gone into “full remission”, all kinds of different things and to this I say; I want to meet your child and I want to spend an extended amount of time with them because only then will I know if they are truly cured or they’re just healthy enough to be high masking. This would always be my assumption: these children have learned to be high masking, and they are healthy enough that they are capable of masking.
I really don’t believe that Autism is caused by underlying infections, but sure, it’s entirely possible. I have lots of underlying infections, things like Epstein-Barr, for all I know, I might have Lyme Disease. I’ve spent a small fortune with various Functional Medicine doctors trying to address my health with moderate success.
Some things are really helpful and effective, but at the end of the day, the most effective treatment is inclusion.
Being included and being accepted, understanding people, understanding that I am a highly tuned, highly sensitive lightning rod of a human, autistics are the canaries in the coal mine. We are the nervous system of the human population, so, of course, we are the first to react to environmental pollutants, toxins, and negative energy. We literally are lightning rods. The world is brighter, and it smells stronger, and it’s louder. It is more intense. We see everything in Technicolor when most people see shades of mauve, gray, and tan; we see them in neon lights. Instead of life, we see a Broadway show every damn day! Can you imagine? The overwhelming exhaustion? Also we perform in a broadway show all day every day masking, mimicking, supressing stims, acting “normal” social nicities doing what people expect when w want to crawl out of our skin.
And yet we are the ones labeled disabled because everything is too overwhelming for us, because we actually feel. We aren’t numbed or deadened like the rest of the world, and they don’t like it; they want to put us on medication to numb and deaden us and keep us quiet.
Keep us working and doing what we’re told. Keep us fitting in and following directions. Keep us small and quiet and compliant, and I’m tired of it. It’s time we decolonize our minds. We accept that, as neurodivergent people, we have special gifts like psychic abilities, intuition, and other things we’ve been told to ignore our whole lives, to our own detriment. We have to manually assess if a person is safe; we have to do almost everything manually because that’s how our brains work. -Autopilot is rarely used by the autistic mind- We have feelings, needs, wants, and desires, and asking to be cared for and fulfilled is actually an incredible act of self-love. But we have been trained for decades to self-abandon to make everyone else comfortable.
Fawning is the nervous system response for a person with the least power over their environment, so naturally, autistic women gravitate towards the FAWN response.
Just the other day, I posted a comment on someone’s post that Autism is a neurotype and not a disorder, and a woman responded that Autism costs families a fortune because of all the health conditions that come with it, and it’s caused by underlying infections that are treatable, and while there is something called pans or pandas which is a disorder that mimics Autism but is actually caused by underlying infections autism is a legitimate thing. It’s not that autism is caused by an underlying medical illness, I really don’t think that, but who knows, maybe it is. This is the author, if you want to check her out: Debbie Kimberg, she’s here on Substack.
We haven’t really done the research that needs to be done, but the more we are studying autism, the more we are finding we all have the same kind of issues: Gut permeability, MCAS or mast cell activation (histamine intolerance), connective tissue disorders like hEDS, arthritis, chronic inflammation, and inflammatory conditions, long covid, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, PMDD, PCOS, PTSD, Dysautonomia, POTS, IC, and more… but the more I l learn the more I see we tend to have the same confusing overlapping conditions.
And what do we need more than anything? We need to be accepted as we are because the number one cause of chronic autoimmune diseases? Stress. Being autistic is inherently stressful; we are told we are doing things wrong from infancy. It is inherently very stressful to be neurodivergent in a world that says there is something wrong with you for feeling too much, seeing too clearly, and understanding more than you are expected to understand. I am running a few minutes late; my previous meeting is running over.
As always, if you are a business owner or know one with a complex problem or anything relating to operations architecture, send them my way. My asynchronous intake form is now live here: Asynchronous Intake
